Currently (meaning early 1993 in terms of the DI Frank Lyle Mystery Series) several members of DI Lyle’s team have children. It remains to be seen whether they will follow their parents into the force or pursue other career plans, maybe even on the wrong side of the law.
Jasmine Lyle is currently not yet two years old so it is really too early to second guess her career aspirations. However she adores her dad who, according to James, “catches bad monsters.”
James Lyle is planning to abandon his law degree and follow his partner and boyfriend into the police. Having almost lost Thomas in Best Served Cold he wants to remain in Ashbeck with him.
Maria Redfern has just turned sixteen. She lives in Ibiza with her Spanish mother, Consuela. When Maria visited her father, Andrew, and stepmother, Tanya, in Murder in the Wings she expressed an interest in police work although she wasn’t sure she could handle the gory aspects such as post-mortems and crime scenes. Tanya suggested a civilian admin post. Maria will come into the main story arc in future novels on account of a tragedy which occurs at the end of Dead on Arrival so we will see then where her career aspirations lie.
DC David Delaney’s daughter, Natalie, is fourteen and has not yet made her series debut. As a result I don’t know much about her.
Sunil Desai Jr is ten years old and never met his father as his mother, Almira, was pregnant at the time of her husband’s murder. Sunil is now aware of the circumstances of his father’s death and is determined to be a good son to his mother. As yet he has no clear ambitions beyond that, but things may change in the not too distant future as he greatly admires his late father’s best friend, DI Lyle.
If one or any of these offspring join the police then they will be part of the new generation of police officers serving Ashbeck.
